Hire a designer or a design subscription? The seed-stage math

At seed, the median startup has four employees, according to Carta. Usually none of them is a designer, and the product still has to look ready for the next round. So the question comes up early: hire a designer, or pay for design by the month? Here is the math, and then the part the math leaves out.

What a full-time designer costs

US startups pay product designers about $150,000 to $160,000 a year in base salary. Wellfound puts the startup average near $150,000. Startup.jobs puts the median at $160,063 across 4,668 job posts.

Salary isn’t the whole cost. Benefits are about 30% of total compensation for US employers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That puts a $150,000 to $160,000 designer at roughly $214,000 to $234,000 a year, before equity, recruiting fees and software.

What a design subscription costs

A senior design subscription costs about $5,000 a month in 2026. That’s $60,000 a year if you never pause, and less if you do.

Side by side

  • Full-time designer: about $214,000 to $234,000 a year, fully loaded
  • Senior design subscription: about $60,000 a year at $5,000 a month
  • Start time: a hire takes weeks or months, a subscription starts this week
  • Coverage: one person’s strengths, or a team across brand, web and product

When hiring wins

Hire when design is the product. If you ship new UI every day, a designer who sits with your engineers will learn your users faster than any outside team. Most startups make that hire around Series A, once the core product works, according to Recruiting From Scratch.

When a subscription wins

  • You need brand, website and product design, but not 40 hours a week of any one of them
  • You’re raising, launching or rebranding in the next 90 days
  • You want senior work now, before a senior salary makes sense
  • You want to pause when the work slows down

The part the math leaves out

A subscription only saves money if the work is good and arrives on time. Ask any studio three questions before you sign:

  1. Who does the work, and how senior are they?
  2. How many requests are active at once, and how fast is a first draft?
  3. Who owns the files and the code if you cancel?

Our answers: senior designers, one request at a time on Design Partner, first drafts in 48 hours, and you own everything.

A simple rule

If design would fill a full-time week for the next year, hire. If it comes in bursts around raises and launches, subscribe until it doesn’t.
