Pitch deck design for seed and Series A founders
Good design won’t save a weak business. But bad design slows down a good story. Investors often read your deck without you in the room, between meetings and sometimes on a phone. Here’s how to design a deck that’s fast to read, plus a slide-by-slide checklist.
Six rules
- One idea per slide. If a slide makes two points, split it.
- Headlines that state the takeaway. “Revenue tripled in six months” beats “Revenue”.
- Big numbers, small labels. The number is the point, and the label explains it.
- Charts with one highlight. Mute everything except the bar or line that matters.
- The real product. Screenshots and short clips build more trust than illustrations.
- One grid, one type system. Same margins, same title position, two fonts at most.
Two versions of the same deck
Make a presenting deck with less text, for when you’re in the room. Make a send-ahead deck with a little more context, for when the deck has to speak for you. Use the same design system for both, so they feel like one company.
Slide-by-slide checklist
- Title: your name, logo and a one-line description.
- Problem: who has it, and how painful it is.
- Solution: what you built, shown with the product.
- Why now: what changed that makes this possible or urgent.
- Market: who buys, and how many of them there are.
- Traction: your best numbers, with dates.
- Business model: how you make money, and what you charge.
- Competition: how you’re different, without a crowded logo grid.
- Team: why you’re the people to build this.
- The ask: how much you’re raising, and what it gets you to.
Common mistakes
- Walls of text you end up reading aloud
- Chart labels too small to read on a laptop
- Slides from five people in five styles
- Stock photos and generic AI images
- Too many fonts, colors and effects
A note on AI deck tools
Tools like Claude Design can now draft a deck from a prompt (MacRumors). They’re useful for a first draft. Give them your brand rules first, or every slide will look like every other AI-made deck (An AI-ready brand).
